EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR IN SCHOOL
GENERAL
- Be polite and respectful.
- Greet your teachers when you meet them.
- Do not mumble when you speak to your teachers.
- Treat your fellow pupils with respect. The senior pupils must be kind and considerate to their juniors.
- Report anyone doing things detrimental to the school.
- Obey all school rules
CONTACT WITH GUESTS/VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL
- Greet them politely.
- Direct them to the General Office where the administrative staff can take over.
DURING FLAG RAISING CEREMONY
- Attendance at the flag-raising ceremony and pledge-taking ceremony is compulsory.
- Assemble according to your classes promptly and quietly.
- Observe all commands.
- Sing the National Anthem with pride.
- Recite the National Pledge clearly and with pride.
- Pay attention when announcements are made.
WEEKLY ASSEMBLY
The weekly assembly is compulsory for all students.
- Assemble according to your classes quickly and quietly.
- Wear your school tie and badge properly.
- Sing the school song with pride
- Sit down only when you are told to do so.
- Be courteous towards the invited speaker or to the class presenting items.
- Pay attention throughout the session.
- Show appreciation for the time and effort put in by the presenters presenting the assembly programme.
AT OTHER PARTS OF THE SCHOOL
- Students are encouraged to use the school bookshop when purchasing textbook and stationery.
- When using staircases, remember to keep left for a smooth flow of traffic.
- Students are to move in twos from class to class briskly, quietly and in an orderly manner.
OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL
Students should always be properly attired and should behave well to project the good name of the school. They should also be courteous and considerate to the public when they are on the buses, the MRT trains and in public places.
Code of Conduct
INTRODUCTION
The basic principles that guide a student behavior in Presbyterian High School are the school’s 8 core values: PRUDENCE, HUMILTY, STEDFASTNESS, FAIRNESS, INTEGRITY, TRUST, TEAMWORK and VALUING THE INDIVIDUAL.
When one is governed by these 8 principles, one will exhibit common sense, responsibility, courtesy, honesty, respect and consideration for others. The school expects every student to maintain a high standard in his/her personal conduct, academic work and CCA participation.
SCHOOL RLULES AND REGULATIONS
ATTENDANCE
Daily attendance is taken by Form Teachers at assembly in the morning for all students. Subject teachers will keep a record of the class attendance at every lesson. The class chairman must inform the subject teachers and Form Teacher if any pupil is found to be missing from the class.
Any student who absents himself/herself from school is expected to inform the school on that day and bring a medical certificate upon his/her return to school. When there is irregular attendance or absence without valid reasons, the student’s parents will be invited to the school to discuss the problem with Form Teacher.
PUNCTUALITY
Punctuality and full attendance at class, rehearsals, extra lesson and Co-curricular Activities are an expression of courtesy. It is also a basic requirement of all PHS students. Latecomers must report to student councilors at the school’s main gate. They can only enter class with the completed Movement Form, which can be obtained from the Security Guard Room. Students who are late for more than once will be liable for disciplinary action.
TRUANCY
Students who play truant will be severely dealt with. Parents will be informed and they will be called to the school to discuss their children’s offence.
LEAVING THE SCHOOL COMPOUND
In the event of sudden illness while in school, a student may obtain permission to leave the school early. Forms for this purpose should be filled in duplicate and submitted to the Form Teacher. Permission to leave early is granted by the Form Teacher and approved by the Vice-Principal or Heads of Department. The Form Teacher would follow up by calling the student’s home to find out his condition. A student would be discouraged from going home if there is no one at home to look after him or her. Under such circumstances, he/she is allowed to rest in the Sick Bay. Students leaving the school without permission will be punished severely.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
- Students are to wear the prescribed school uniform and modification to the uniform is NOT allowed.
- Students’ pride in the school is shown by the way they wear the school uniform. Shirt should be tucked in. Girls’ skirt should not be shorter than 3cm above the knee.
- Students are not to fold the sleeves of their shirts. Students who come to school during the holidays must be in full or half school uniform i.e. school pants/skirts with school T-shirt and shoes.
- Shoes and socks: standard white laced-shoes and white Presbyterian High School socks are part of the school uniform. Visible height of the socks must be more than 10 cm. Coloured track shoes are not to be worn except on Saturdays or for CCAs. The wearing of slippers and high-cut shoes to school is prohibited.
- PE Attire: proper PE attire must be worn during PE lessons. PE T-shirts are to be tucked in at all times. After a PE lesson, students must be attired in formal school uniform. Students are not allowed to wear PE uniform in class or during assembly
- Name Tag: worn below the school badge at all times.
- School Badge: students must always wear the school badge (pinned above the shirt pocket) at all times (while in school uniform).
- Warm clothing: Students are allowed to wear plain navy blue, beige, black, white or grey colored sweaters, cardigans or jackets without any wordings, pictures, stripes or hoods on days when the weather is chilly.
- School tie: the school tie must be worn with pride at every Friday Assembly day, chapel service and at special functions specified by the school.
- Headgear: any type of headgear is not allowed in school. This includes headbands, hoods and hats/caps.
- Indiscreet and indecent undergarments are not allowed in school at all times.
HAIR
- Both boys and girls are required to keep their hair short and neatly combed. Girls who keep long hair must have it plaited or tied up. Ribbons, hair clips and hair bands should be plain black or dark blue in colour. Extreme hairstyles and the use of hair colouring are not allowed.
- Beard and sideburns are not permitted for boys.
ORNAMENTS AND JEWELLERY
- Only girls are allowed to wear one pair of similar, small, round gold coloured ear studs. The diameter of the studs should not be more than 3mm. The ear studs must be worn on the ear lobes.
- All other forms of jewellery or ornaments must not be worn in school.
- No talisman is to be worn but it may be kept in the purse or wallet.
FINGERNAILS AND MAKE-UP
- Fingernails must be kept short and neat.
- No nail polish is allowed.
- Pupils are not allowed to use any form of make-up.
SPECTACLES
Students who wear spectacles must not use tinted lenses. Spectacles with fancy frames are not allowed.
SCHOOL BAGS
Fanciful or branded school bags are not allowed in school.
SINGING OF NATIONAL ANTHEM AND PLEDGE
Students who are Singapore Citizens must sing the National Anthem and take the Pledge. Students will take the Pledge with the right fist placed over the heart.
CLASSROOM CLEANLINESS
Classrooms should be kept clean.
USE OF SCHOOL CANTEEN
· Students are expected to queue up when buying food at the canteen stalls.
· All food and drinks must be consumed only in the canteen. Empty packets must be thrown into the rubbish bin and utensils must be returned to their respective receptacles.
· Students are reminded to keep the noise level in the canteen especially when the Hall is in use.
SCHOOL PROPERTY
· Defacing or damaging school property is unacceptable. This includes writing messages on desks, lockers and walls. Any damaged property must be reported to the General Office immediately.
· Writing on the white board is not allowed unless prior permission has been obtained from a teacher.
· No parties, food and drinks are allowed in the classrooms.
· Save water and electricity. Lights and fans should be switched off when not in use.
· Do not litter the classrooms and the school grounds.
· Toilets must be kept clean and dry. They are to be flushed after use.
SERIOUS OFFENCES
The following are serious offences and may lead to a pupil being severely punished or expelled from school:
- Arson
- Altering school documents
- Cheating during tests and examinations
- Creating web-sites using school’s name or logo
- Defying authority and being rude to teachers
- Extortion
- Fighting or hooliganism
- Forging parents’ or teachers’ signatures
- Gangsterism /secret society activities
- Gambling
- Possession of and trafficking in any controlled drug
- Possession of pornographic materials
- Possessions of weapons and replica
- Racial, ethnic, religious or sexual harassment
- Smoking, glue sniffing and consuming drugs or alcohol
- Stealing or pilfering
- Using vulgar language or indecent signs
- Vandalism
PROHIBITED ITEMS
- Expensive personal items such as radios, MP3, discman, pagers and hand phones and other items like gambling cards and yo-yos must not be brought to school or they would be confiscated for a length of time determined by the discipline committee.
- Chewing gum is strictly banned on the school premises.
- Liquid correction fluid (Liquid paper) is strictly banned from use in school.
- Items that pose a risk to health and safety of others.
